In normal circumstances SCSI interfaced tape drives can only be placed at a maximum of 25 meters from the host system and this can cause problems when site layout is affected by this restriction.
By using SCSI bus extenders utilising 2Gbit fibre channel the user can position his or her peripherals to suit their needs, even if the requirement is to site the device in another building some distance away. Various version of the extenders are available with distances from a few hundred metres up to tens of Kms being available.
Where there is already a fibre channel SAN in use these extenders can bridge through the SAN fabric whilst keeping the peripherals totally isolated from the other SAN hosts so offereing cost advantages against a dedicated connection. With connections suited to all iSeries features these extenders allow the utilisation of advanced fibre channel features even with older AS400 systems.
