Data Security
With the increase in reliance on data held on computers the value of that data has also increased. As well as ensuring the security and availability of your data with good backup procedures and equipment; organisations are now looking to protect their data against theft or fraud. In the past data written to tape could be easily read if that tape was lost or stolen. Products now available allow your data to be encrypted, on the fly, ensuring your data cannot be read if stolen, or worse fraudulently modified on the tape.
Positioning of Equipment
Cable length limitations often restrict the placement of peripherals causing major headaches for planners. Fibre optic extenders resolve this problem allowing tape drives and DASD to be located where they are needed rather where cable restrictions dictate. This means that under-utilised peripherals may be shared between multiple hosts and possible cost savings can be made.
For Disaster Recovery extenders may be used to locate tape libraries ‘off-site’ ensuring up to date data is always available either on the main site or the DR site without couriers transporting tapes between sites. This distance can be as much as 80 kilometres.
