To ensure that data written to a tape cannot be taken to an unauthorised system and read, an inline data encryption unit can be fitted between the AS/400 feature controller and the tape drive.
By installing this unit the user can select to either encrypt all data being written to tape or simply select the by-pass mode to be written for data interchange use. Where the requirement is for data to be sent between sites in a secure form, two in-line units can be used.
There are three main uses where the "Paranoia" tape encryption products are being used:-
To ensure the security of data in transit to and stored at an off-site vault;
To allow large amounts of data to be transferred via commercial couriers over long distances without any security breach;
To ensure the privacy of data in a shared tape library when it can be fitted to one or more drives within the library unit.
The unit can be integrated with other products such as mirrored and remote tape drives as part of a overall business continuity plan. With the introduction of new information security standards companies need to start to assess the possible impact on their business of data being made public or simply available to their competitors.
The same units can be used on all major platform types and tape drives so also allowing for a secure data interchange between heterogeneous systems.
